Citation Formatting Help

Citation Management Systems

These tools allow you to gather citations and PDFs in one place and then quickly create a bibliography. You have to start using them well before your paper is due, however.

Notes:

  • We recommend that you use EndNote, RefWorks, or Zotero, as these are robust and authoritative Citation Managers.  We recommend that you not use things like BibEasy, BibMe, Cite This for Me, or Noodle Tools.  The exception is if a professor or advisor requests that you use these tools.
  • It's Easy to Switch - If you are using one of the recommended tools & a professor or group leader asks you to use another one, it is very easy to export your citations from one to a .RIS file - and then import them into another.

Finding DOIs

Find DOIs with CrossRef - Use this to find if an article has a DOI or not.  This is especially important for publication or grants.  For Journal articles : Only assume there is no DOI if the publication is pre 2000.

To use CrossRef

  • Open CrossRef at the link
  • Choose the "Metadata Search" option
  • Type/paste  in the full reference of the article you have or as much of it as you have.
