Specialized Tools

There are Tools that allow you to follow up on references or links where you don't have enough information

The Way Back Machine - allows you to look at past snapshots of the Web and thus find websites and information where the URL you have no longer works
CrossRef - allows you to determine if a citation has a DOI or not

Wayback Machine

Wayback Machine
The Wayback Machine is a tool hosted by the Internet Archive, that allows you to help search for websites and the data on them that may have been since taken down or changed. It is good for finding websites that are now defunct or comparing changes over time.

It allows you to research now dead links and to potentially find enough information to identify their sources or possible new places where the data might live.

When you go to The Wayback Machine - you can search for:

Keywords from the original Website - this might be the title, the organization who hosted it, etc.
A URL you have that no longer works

You can then limit by date if desired

Finding DOIs

Crossref
CrossRef allows you to search a reference to find if there is a DOI - Digital Object Identifier associatied with it. DOIs are required in Citations if the item you are citing has one. This is handy way to check for a DOI if you don't have one with your citation.

When you open CrossRef

Choose the "Metadata Search" option
Type/paste in the full reference of the article you have or as much of it as you have.
