Civil War

Black and white, tonal photograph of a Civil War battleship.Unknown artist (American, 19th century) The USS Pinola was a gunboat of the Union Navy that served in several attacks including the blockade off Mobile Bay in Alabama and in Texas. 

Mathew Brady (American, 1823 - 1896) Brady is best known for his documentary images of the Civil War battlefront. He opened a photography studio in New York in 1844 and began selling images of famous figures including U.S. Presidents.

Unknown artist (American, 19th century) Three images of university dorm rooms at the turn of the twentieth century, from the John E. Sheridan collection.

Still Life

Arrangement of fruit on a blue surface.Frederick Eugene Ives (1856 - 1937) Ives was an inventor from Connecticut. He was a founding member of the Photographic Society of Philadelphia and a pioneer in the development of color photography. The Manuscripts repository contains several of his kromogram plates.
