Photography Collection at Georgetown University Library

This guide provides an overview of the genres, artists and categories of original fine art photographs in the art collection holdings of the Booth Family Center for Special Collections

Background

The thematic groupings in twentieth century photography are offered as a general attempt to add some structure to the guide. Artists are grouped according to the type of work we have in the collection, and not strictly according to their overall body of work or how they are categorized in reference works. For example, the work of Harry Callahan (1912 - 1999) falls into both Fine Art and Street Photography categories, but for this guide he is listed under Fine Art Photography in the Non-Narrative page because the majority of works in the collection fit mostly within this category. Similarly, Arthur Rothstein (1915-1985) could be considered a photojournalist as well as a documentary photographer, and Paul J. Woolf (1899-1985) worked in many creative forms including portraiture, advertising, industrial and architectural photography.

Some unusual photographic processes are represented in other Booth units. The Alexis Carrel Collection contains autochrome plates used in medical teaching (formerly in the Dahlgren Medical Library). There are also magic lantern slides and dry plate negatives made by John W. Brosnan, S.J. transferred from the Woodstock College Archive.
