This guide provides an overview of the genres, artists and categories of original fine art photographs in the art collection holdings of the Booth Family Center for Special Collections

Aerial and Landscape Photography

Ansel Adams (American, 1902 - 1984) Known for his classic black and white, panoramic views of the American West; founder of f/64, an association that advocated sharp focus and full tonal range in photography.

Marilyn Bridges (American, born 1948) Pilot and photographer of aerial views of ancient man-made structures and modern forms around the world.

Mark Citret (American, b. 1949) California-based photographer; images of landmarks and the natural world.

Sally Gall (American, b. 1956) Poetic landscapes and nature studies in black and white.

Caleb Cain Marcus (American, b. 1978) Sweeping landscape views of beautiful international locales. 

Ray Mortenson (American, b. 1944) New York-based photographer who captures views in New Jersey and surrounding areas.

Josef Sudek (Czech, 1896 - 1976) Known as "the poet of Prague" he captured haunting and wistful images of his native city and founded the Czech Photographic Society in 1924.

Lloyd Ullberg (American,1904 - 1996) A self-taught photographer known for modernist street scenes and nature studies; Ullberg was a staff photographer for the California Academy of Sciences.

Edward Weston (American, 1886 - 1958) One of the most influential photographers of the 20th century, he focused on images of the American West as well as nature studies at close range.

Gary Zuercher (American, contemporary) Dual career in business entrepreneurship; worked as a commercial photographer and published a photo book on the bridges of Paris.

Fine Art and Avant Garde Photography

Ilse Bing (German, 1899 - 1998) Architectural and nature studies in avant-garde aesthetic during inter-war years; series on nuns.

Harry Callahan (1912 - 1999) Nature, building studies, street views and figures; worked in color and black and white; innovator concerned with line and form, and light and darkness. 

Ralph Gibson (American, b. 1939) Author of numerous photo books; uses some surreal juxtapositions; fragmented figures and sharp angled perspective.

Heinrich Heidersberger (German, 1906 - 2006) Classic images of architecture and built forms; photographed rhythmograms.

Jenny Lynn (American, b. 1953) Publishes in magazines and book covers; interested in the interplay between design, concept and object.

Jill Mathis (American, b. 1964) Worked with Ralph Gibson and explores themes of etymology in her work.

Dorothy Norman (American, 1905 - 1997) Inspired by Alfred Steiglitz, Norman photographed cultural icons and special sites, and was a dedicated social activist.

Constant Puyo (French, 1857 - 1933) A leading figure of the French Pictorialist movement, developed soft-focus lenses and processes that achieved impressionistic effect.

Michael A. Smith (1942 - 2018) Championed large format photography, taught photography and published numerous photo books.

Joyce Tenneson (American, b.1945) Tonal images in soft focus of flowers, cultural figures and a limited edition portfolio of nude studies.

Pete Turner (American, 1934 - 2017) Considered a pioneer of color photography, Turner published in many prominent magazines and over 100 album covers.

Portrait Photography

Philippe Halsman (American, 1906 - 1979) Celebrity and fashion photographer; contributed to Time and Vogue.

Carol Harrison (American, contemporary) Georgetown alum who focused on images of local artists and G.U. faculty.

Walter Iooss (American, b. 1943) Award-winning photographer of world-class sports figures; published in Sports Illustrated.

Annie Leibovitz (American, born 1949) Insightful and artfully staged portraits of celebrities and notable figures. Only one image in the collection.

Jacques Lowe (American, 1930 - 2001) Unposed images of people of various professions in New York during the 1960s.

Clare Boothe Luce, Professional and Personal Photographs (1905-1982) A voluminous collection of portraits of Luce as well as family members by famous photographers such as Cecil Beaton, Philippe Halsman and Edward Steichen; housed in the Manuscripts repository.

Martin S. Quigley Photographic Collection Contains publicity portraits of musicians and movie stars at mid-century; housed in the Manuscripts repository. Quigley was a distinguished publisher and editor of several influential motion picture trade journals.

August Sander (German, 1876 - 1974) Portraits of German artists and avant-garde figures of the 1920s.

Doris Ulmann (American, 1882 - 1934) Documented rural people in the South, particularly Appalachia and the Sea Islands.

Carl Van Vechten (American, 1880 - 1964) Writer who photographed luminaries of the interwar years and a patron of the Harlem Renaissance.

 

Still Life and Figure Studies

Color photo of yellow wildflowers by Jeannette Klute.Lucien Clergue (French, 1934 - 2014) Mentored by Picasso, Clergue was inspired by life in his home city or Arles and also did portrait photography.

Larry Colwell (American, 1911 - 1972) Noted for figure studies and dancers; published in Aperture Magazine in the 1950s.

Jeannette Klute (American, 1918 - 2009) Pioneering female photographer who helped innovate the dye transfer process at Kodak and advanced the early use of color photography.

Erica Lennard (American, b. 1950) Based in Paris, Lennard began in fashion photography and transitioned into garden and nature views.

Bert G.F. Shankman (American, contemporary) Locally-based photographer of flowers who grows his own subjects and uses Photoshop in editing his compositions.
