E-Reserves for Online Courses

To place materials on reserve within your online course, please fill out our E-Reserves Request Form.

  • There is no limit to the number of core required e-reserves readings a faculty member may have on reserve.
  • An e-reserve is a single title of a book chapter, a journal article, or professors' notes, syllabi, or handouts.
  • If the library does not have the article, we will try to obtain a copy. Entire books cannot be scanned and placed on e-reserve. Read more about restrictions on e-reserves in our Copyright Policies.
  • PDFs will be made available to faculty via GU Box. PDFs will be scanned with OCR so they are accessible by assistive technology software.
  • E-Reserves requests need to be submitted every semester.
  • All questions about e-reserves can be sent to reserves@georgetown.edu

Linking to Library Materials in Canvas

When adding library materials to online courses, we encourage you to link to our online access and not upload PDF’s. When linking to materials, be sure to add http://proxy.library.georgetown.edu/login?url= to the beginning of the URL for the item.

To make this process easier, article databases will often highlight a "permanent link" or "stable URL." These links can be embedded without adding the URL prefix. The screenshot below demonstrates how to find a permalink in EBSCO databases. While permalinks will be in different places depending on the database you are accessing, they are generally found in the same areas where you save, cite, and export citations.

A sharable URL that is ready to embed in Canvas will look something like this:

http://proxy.library.georgetown.edu/login?url=http://www.jstor.org/stable...

Streaming Media Requests

If you are looking to add streaming media from the Georgetown Library to your online course please consult our guide on Streaming Media Reserves.

  • Check  Georgetown Library's licensed streaming media collections to see if the media you are looking for is already available.
  • To request reserve services, complete and submit the Media Reserves Form. You must sign in with your Georgetown NetID and password to access this Google form.
  • Streaming media can be provided directly within Canvas via Sharestream and/or permalinks to licensed distributors.

Locate Books, Articles, and Media

The tutorials below outline how to find materials within the Georgetown Library using HoyaSearch. In addition to these videos, it would also be helpful to locate and bookmark the research guide associated with your program. These guides will point to discipline specific databases, books, and other publications.

Request Library Instruction

The librarians at the School of Continuing Studies Library provide library research instruction designed to introduce students to the libraries' collections, services, and research tools. Librarians also provide strategies for efficiently and effectively carrying out library research. If you are interested in booking an instruction session with one of the SCS Librarians please fill out our instruction session request form

Library instruction sessions…

  • Are taught by librarians at faculty request;
  • Introduce students to relevant research materials for their course assignments;
  • Outline the research process;
  • Help students examine and discuss pertinent research resources;
  • Introduce students to citation management systems (i.e. RefWorks);
  • Offer students the opportunity to practice using these resources in the instructional session.

Two weeks’ notice required. Sessions are most effective when held during class time and with the faculty member present. Please contact the SCS librarians at scslibrary@georgetown.edu with any questions.
