Creating Oral Histories

This guide offers general tips and resources for those interested in undertaking oral history projects

Setting up Zoom for Transcriptions

In order to have Zoom record and process a transcript of your session, you will need to make sure "Create audio transcript" is enabled through the Zoom Cloud recording settings. Zoom will not only have an audio transcript playing side-by-side with your video, but you will also be able to download the transcript to be attached or copied and pasted to your website.

To create an audio transcript of your Zoom session:

  1. Open the Zoom client and click Settings
  2. Underneath the heading, Cloud recording check "Create audio transcript"

It is worth doing a test recording to ensure Zoom is generating the transcript ahead of recording your podcast.

Note: Unlike setting Zoom up to record and save an audio file for each participant, and having that file be saved locally on your computer, the "Create audio transcript" feature only works with saving to the cloud.

Recording in Zoom and Downloading your Files

  1. Once you have started your meeting, double-check and make sure you Select Record to the Cloud.
  2. When you are finished, stop the recording and end the Zoom meeting. Zoom will process your file and have it available on the cloud.
  3. Navigate to the Zoom website.
  4. Under the Recordings, tab will be a list of meetings with recordings. Select the meeting to view the various files you can download. Note: If you navigate to this tab immediately after your session, your files may not be available. Depending on the length of your session, Zoom may take longer to process and have available your downloadable files.

View and Edit Zoom Transcripts

Zoom audio transcripts are saved in VTT format. If you download the VTT file, you can open it with a text editor or word processing application. You can also view or edit transcripts through the Zoom website.

  1. Sign in to Zoom
  2. Click Recordings - Cloud Recording.
  3. Find the name of your recorded meeting
  4. Click the play icon.
  5. The text of the transcript displays on the right-hand side of the video.
  6. Hover over a phrase you want to edit and click the pencil icon.
  7. Make any changes to the text, then click the check mark.

The updated version of the text is displayed when you play the audio or video file.
