Creating Oral Histories

This guide offers general tips and resources for those interested in undertaking oral history projects

Initial Project Planning

Initial project planning should encompass the following:

  • Formulation of a central question or issue to research. 
  • Identification of potential interviewees
  • Identification of potential interviewers
  • Identification of potential audience(s)
  • Consideration of how the interviews will be made available (published in a book, used in a documentary, added to a website, etc.)
  • Identification of needed resources (people, equipment, software applications etc.)
  • Budget (for equipment, transcription services, printing, web hosting, etc.)
  • Timeline to keep the project on track
  • Plan to publicize the project
