Public Assistance Programs - General

Provides applications for a range of benefits such as food assistance and medical coverage.

Department of Human Services (DHS) Service Centers provide in-person support for individuals and families seeking public assistance programs in the District of Columbia. At these locations, residents can apply for or manage benefits such as food assistance, medical coverage, and cash assistance. Each center is staffed with professionals ready to help navigate available services and ensure access to critical resources. 

DC Public Library

The District of Columbia Public Library is a vibrant center of activity for residents and visitors in the nation’s capital. The library provides environments that invite reading, learning and community discussion and equips people to learn all their lives, to embrace diversity and to build a thriving city.

The Youth Services Division provides Youth Services and Support including crisis support services for youth and their families, diversion from court/juvenile justice system, family-based prevention and intervention programs, and programs on teen parenting.

Family Emergency Shelters

Through contracts with service providers, the Department of Human Services (DHS) offers emergency shelter to families experiencing homelessness in safe and dignified buildings through the District.  Each program provides a rich array of supports and service connections – including housing search, connections to mental health and employment services, and meaningful activities for children – with the goal of helping families exit to permanent housing and get back on their feet quickly.
