Keywords to Subjects

Subject headings describe a work’s intellectual contents and should be used to find relevant resources and to search more efficiently. The following describes 2 ways to identify subject headings.

1. Begin with an Advanced Search and limit to GU Only to identify a relevant resources. Limit your Content Type to Books to focus on that particular format. Check the full record to identify appropriate subject headings.

  • When beginning from the Advanced Search screen, you may choose to search in any field or in specific fields: Author/Creator, Title, Subject, and Call Number. Use the fields in the drop-down menu to control your search results.
  • Combine your search terms with Boolean operators: and, or, not
    • Use and to limit your search
    • Use or to expand your search
    • Use not to exclude specific terms
  • Use an asterisk (*) to truncate your search terms and retrieve spelling variants

Searching with Subject Headings

You can find subject headings for your search in one of two ways.

1. By identifying a relevant subject in one of the search results from your keyword search.

2. By browsing the subject headings under Modify your results heading to the left side of the screen.

By clicking on headings through either of these means, you can limit your search or launch a new search for that specific subject.
