Thinking Historically about Primary Sources: Explore More

Television News

Compare the Internet Archive TV News Archive, the Vanderbilt Television News Archive, YouTube, the websites of your local stations, and the websites of ABC, NBC, or CBS. What types of content are available on each site? What is missing? Can you sketch out a lifecycle of television news? Do you think the lifecycle has changed recently?

Newspapers

Using Google, try to find newspapers from the 1970s. What did you find? Look at ProQuest Historical Newspapers. Why do you think the results are different? What newspapers from the 1970s does the Library of Congress have? Can you sketch out the lifecycle of one newspaper?

Collecting Recent Materials

If you were interested in documenting a current event, like Black Lives Matter, what types of materials would you want to collect? Remember that you can't collect everything! How might what you collect now affect how historians interpret the event in 50 years? What are the lifecycles of these sources? How do they differ from the case studies?
