Periodical article abbreviations can sometimes look even more cryptic than Book ones, but they are often easier to decipher because they are more standardardized.

Periodical articles often do not give the author or the title, but unlike for books - those are not necessary to get the article.

Almost every reference to an article, regardless of the language contains at a minimum:

  • Abbreviation of the Journal/Periodical Title
  • Volume number or Issue number or both
  • Page Number - starting page or whole range

Sometimes there is a year, but you don't have to have that because for periodical articles, the volume# is linked to the year.

You want to focus on the Journal / Periodical Title abbreviation.  Once you have this, you are good to go.

See the individual ways to decipher Periodical title abbreviations on the tabs that follow

Google ~ Google again often works for this

Type the word abbreviation followed by the whole abbreviation

Example abbreviation Archiv. f. naturg Google gives you Archiv für Naturgeschichte which is the title of the periodical.

If this does not work, try the next tab.
