Overview
There are many Generative AI tools that can be used to assist in writing code, analyzing data, and creating data visualizations. Many of these are listed below, with information on usage and cost. Keep the following in mind when selecting a tool:
- You must adhere to guidelines for use and citation set forth in your course syllabus, department rules, and/or journal publication requirements.
- If a tool requires you to upload data and/or code, and you are working with secure information, be sure to thoroughly review the terms and conditions of the tool to ensure secure information is not retained by the tool!
- Any output from an AI-based tool should be reviewed for accuracy. Generative AI tools are helpful assistants when working with data to answer research questions, but do not replace a thorough research methodology and framework.
General-Use Generative AI Tools to Assist in Coding
- ChatGPTGeneral-use AI model created by OpenAI. ChatGPT can be used to assist in writing code in a variety of languages, and is free of charge. ChatGPT also has the ability to upload data files and use prompts to do analysis and visualization with those files (limited credits in free version).
- GeminiGeneral-use AI model created by Google. Gemini's model is free and is proficient in the most popular coding languages. Gemini cannot be accessed on your Georgetown Google account - you must use a personal Google account.
- CopilotGeneral-use AI model created by Microsoft. Copilot is free and can assist in a variety of coding languages.
- ClaudeGeneral-use AI model created by Anthropic. The Claude free tier uses the Sonnet model and is rate-limited. The paid Claude Opus model is designed for more complex analysis and coding.
Specialized Generative AI Tools to Assist in Coding
- GitHub CopilotAn AI coding tool trained on GitHub, a large repository for software developers. This is a paid tool, however, free accounts are available for verified students and teachers.
- CodeDamnAI-powered code debugger. Part of a suite of AI tools for learning coding.
- ZZZ CodeAI-powered suite of free coding tools. ZZZ code can be used to debug code, explain confusing code, and more.
Analysis and Visualization Tools Using Generative AI
- Tableau AITableau's premium paid products have a suite of AI integrations for visualizing data and automating analysis. These features are not available in the free or educational licenses of the software.
- Atlas.tiAtlas.ti offers AI-powered sentiment analysis, coding, and chat tools for qualitative analysis. Note that many of these features are in Beta mode. Atlas.ti is available by reservation on ISIDORE, the library's specialized data computer.
- Google ColaboratoryGoogle Colaboratory (Colab) is an online Jupyter notebook that is great for learning Python code for data science. Colab has integrations with Gemini, Google's generative AI platform, to assist in writing code within the platform. Colab is available for free via your Georgetown Google account.
- PowerBIPowerBI's premium service includes Copilot as part of the Microsoft Fabric suite. Copilot can summarize your data and automate reporting. The free version of PowerBI does not include these AI integrations.
- InfogramAI-powered visualization website that operates similar to Canva. Infogram's free tier supports up to 10 projects. Note that Infogram does not support complex visualization.
- Julius AIAI analysis and visualization tool. Julius AI provides the underlying Python code for analysis and visualization to "show its work". The free tier is limited to 15 analyses per month. Student and teacher discounts are available.
- VizlyAI analysis and visualization tool. Vizly provides underlying Python or R code for insights. The free tier is limited to 10 analyses per month. Student and teacher discounts are available.
- Microsoft ExcelSome versions of Microsoft Excel have integrations with Copilot, assisting you in formulas, data cleaning, and analysis, through natural language prompts. Note that Georgetown's Microsoft 365 subscription does not include Copilot. There are also additional third-party Generative AI add-ons Microsoft Excel you can access by clicking "Add-Ins" in the ribbon. Be sure to read through the terms and conditions on these add-ons, especially when working with secure data.
