Affirming Solidarity With Our Asian, Asian American and Pacific Islander Community

Dear Members of the Georgetown University Community,

During the past year, our country has witnessed an escalation of violence against Asians, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders throughout the United States. We have all heard about the horrific murder of eight people, six of whom were women of Asian descent, in Georgia earlier this week, and it is a painful reminder of the violence experienced by members of the Asian, Asian American and Pacific Islander community and by women of all backgrounds across the country. We strongly condemn these incidents of violence and hatred and are united against such acts of racism and misogyny.

As President DeGioia shared yesterday, “we are called to be in solidarity with our Asian American students, faculty, and staff—to affirm our care and support for one another and to continue our work, here at Georgetown, to sustain a community that is inclusive, welcoming, and respectful of people of all backgrounds.”

We invite you to join a virtual interfaith prayer to end anti-Asian violence and violence against women this Sunday, March 21, at 5 p.m., which will be led by Campus Ministry chaplains and staff and livestreamed on the Georgetown Facebook page.

We recognize the impacts on physical and mental health that these deeply troubling incidents have had on our community, including on individual students, faculty and staff. For students in need of resources to address the impact of anti-racism, please reach out to Counseling and Psychiatric Service (CAPS). For faculty and staff, please contact the Faculty & Staff Assistance Program (FSAP). Community members can also access other mental health, wellness and health care resources.

To report an incident of bias, please use our bias reporting process. If you believe you have experienced discrimination in violation of one of Georgetown’s non-discrimination policies, or are aware of discrimination occurring in a Georgetown University program or activity, you may choose to file a complaint with the Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity, and Affirmative Action (IDEAA). Reporting the incident may lead to an investigation by IDEAA.

We hope we can all take this moment to reaffirm our core values of respecting the inherent dignity of one another and fostering diversity, equity, inclusion and racial and gender justice for all.
