Creating an Account

Creating Your Georgetown University RefWorks Account:

Note:  It's best when you create your account that you are on-campus or through the Georgetown Library website.    

  1. Open your browser and go to

  2. Click on "Log in to RefWorks".

  3. Click the Sign up for a New Account link.

  4. Complete the New User Information box.

Note:  When creating your Login Name, please do not use the following characters:

* Asterisk

< >[ ] Brackets

= Equal sign

+ Plus sign

" Quotes

\ / Slashes

, . : ; Comma, Period, Colon, Semicolon

  1. Click Create Account.

    You will receive an email confirmation that has been customized to suit your site's requirements.

After you click on create account, you'll be brought in to your new, empty RefWorks account where you can begin adding your references.

Logging in to RefWorks

Users that are part of an Georgetown University subscription have several ways to log in to RefWorks. The first is from an IP-authenticated computer on-campus. The second is from a computer that is not IP-authenticated (for example, your own personal computer at home).  In the latter situation, you will need to authenticate by following one of the methods below.

Logging in from the Georgetown Library website:

  1. Open your browser and go to  

  2. You will have to log in using your last name and GOCard number to use library resources and then you can log in to RefWorks. 

Logging in from

  1. In your browser, go to  You'll be brought to the RefWorks Login Center where you'll see three tabs (Remote Access, Individual Log-In, Trial Log-In) .

  2. In the Remote Access tab, enter your organization's Group Code and click on Go To Login.  YOU WILL NEED TO CONTACT THE REFERENCE DESK TO OBTAIN THE GROUP CODE (

  3. Enter your personal Login Name and Password.
