Project
"Students form teams of about 4 people who work together during the course on the Foreign Direct Investment project. Each student team imagines that they report to the senior vice president for global strategy. He requests (that is, I request) that you conduct a masterful analysis of a potential foreign direct investment with respect to a particular country (or, possibly, a region, such as CARICOM). He asks that you consider the company, its organizational capabilities within sector specific and global competition circumstances, the potential customers, the competitive circumstances in the country, and the foreign direct investment climate in the country, including financial, law and regulatory, political, social, and cultural issues. Each team chooses a real company, gathers all relevant information and data from the company itself, government and multilateral institution sources, media reports, and other credible sources. Please footnote and cite sources. The company may be from any industry sector, manufacturing or service. Any country may be considered, with the following exceptions: Brazil, Chile, China, Finland, and India. Classroom discussions regarding these countries will be extensive. The project must concern a possible foreign direct investment. However, it is legitimate to recommend not to invest or to recommend that investment be contingent on certain changes in their investment climate. The project should be delivered with a one-page executive summary, a body of text 20-30 pages in length, appendices (tables, figures, pictures, etc.), and references. The project should be submitted on the last day of class.
Final grades are determined according to the following weights: class participation—10%, group FDI project—30%, midterm exam—30%, final exam—30%."
